Head Studies

From a model. encaustic (wax) on panel.

Head painting of the Father of Pragmatism, William james.

Character head painting from memory using acrylic

This was done using a free digital program called alchemy.

My first ipad painting, which was done using the Inspire Pro app

Still life done in acrylic 15" x 20"on illustration board. Focused on keeping the initial layers really transparent to achieve more surface variation without doing too much. Time spent: approx 3 hours.

A Digital sketch from memory, using Painter 11...I like drawing old dudes with big noses.

Digital sketch of a more affluent female character. Done from memory. Executed in Painter 11.

I was thinking "French" as I was imagining this guy.....French, and in jail. Painted with Painter 11.

A portrait of a princess archetype.....but not necessarily a trustworthy one. Done with Painter 11.

Digital sketch using Painter 11.

Acrylic on board. This was a developmental sketch I did for my queen Lizmayana character in my story. I tried to imagine her younger and show her here wearing this overwhelming head dress as a symbol of her burden/responsibility as queen.

Sketch done using Painter 11. I got carried away with the textures as I was experimenting with them, but I think that the tones and colors have a decent assemblage.

5 minute sketch of a nervous looking guy, using Painter program.

Commissioned watercolor portrait I did of a child who passed away.

Here's a page out of my sketchbook of various head studies for various archetypes and ages. these are done with black prisma color on vellum trace paper.

Drawing of the Sherlock Holmes character from the PBS series

Portrait sketch of a dweeb. Prisma color on computer paper

Mr. Ugly Potato Face. Prismacolor on paper.

Really more of a costume design than a head study, but given that his arms were not given any attention, he made it into the head studies section :)  Prisma color pencil on computer paper.

Head studies of a young male with variations of hair and expression. Pencil on paper.

A sketch of the great American thinker, William James, pre-paint

Pen and Ink on paper. Often times when I do a pen/ink drawing like this, I will just start and finish with pen. Its a bad habit to always generate a known outcome, and pencil sometimes has a way of doing this.

This contour drawing was pen only and done from a live model. I definitely wasn't going for "pretty."
